More Nigerians are still reacting to the recent appointment of service Chiefs by President Muhammadu Buhari and expressing expectations from the new security helmsmen.
Speaking in Awka, the National Vice President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene said the new service Chiefs should hit the ground running to reverse the present high rate of insecurity challenging most parts of the country.
Chief Okeke-Ogene said the service Chiefs should bring fresh ideas and strategies to tackle insurgency, herdsmen menace, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and other violent crimes holding the country hostage.
He lamented that the high rate of insecurity across the country is crippling socio-economic activities and worsening the level of recession and inflation rate, warning that incessant attacks on farmers and destruction of their farm land if not checked would plunge the country into food crisis in near future, thereby increasing poverty and hunger in the land.
The Ohaneze Vice President stressed the need for security agencies to work closely with the Governors who are constitutionally empowered as Chief security officers of their respective states to achieve the desired goals while Nigerians should provide useful and prompt information to security operatives to enable them flush out hoodlums from their hideouts.
Chief Okeke-Ogene also pointed out that reflection of Federal character in appointments to represent the interest of the various geo-political zones would help curb restiveness and discontent in the country.
Also speaking, a community leader, Chief Chinedu Onyema called for proper empowerment of vigilante groups and community policing to nip crime and criminality in the bud.
