The Transition Committee chairman, Awka South Local Government Area, Mr. Leo Nwuba has disbursed tools and equipment required for Special Public Works, SPW, programme to nine communities in the council area.
The disbursement, which took place at the local government headquarters Amawbia, saw the Presidents General of all the nine communities in the local government area receive their community share of the working materials.
The programme, designed to employ one thousand Nigerians from each of the seven hundred and seventy-four local government areas under the Special Public Works, will have the employees earn twenty thousand naira monthly stipends for three months.
According to the Federal Government, this will amount to forty-six point four-four billion naira as stipends for the stop-gap jobs.
Presenting the materials, Mr. Nwuba, who extolled Governor Willie Obiano for his tireless efforts in attracting all that is due to the state, assured that the council will ensure close monitoring for optimum performance .
He appealed to Presidents General to report any shortlisted person found wanting for replacement as the programme seeks to develop communities and reduce unemployment in the country.
The Anambra State National Directorate for Employment Coordinator, Mrs. Chika Ufele, who spoke through Mrs. Robinson Hulda said that the jobs relate to maintenance of feeder roads, drainages, market and masses-oriented projects adding that the beneficiaries will work within their locality to reduce transport burden.
Responding, the President General, Isiagu Community Union, Mr. Luis Okeke and the Vice President General of Nibo Town Union, Deacon Bethram Anene promised to judiciously utilize the tools and equipment to better the lots of their subjects.
The transient job programme is a dry season off-farm job initiative of the Federal Government aimed at mitigating the socio-economic effects of COVID-19 pandemic.
