The Agbo-Edo New Motor Spare Parts Market Nnewi has been shut due to its non-compliance with COVID-19 safety and preventive protocols.
The state government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Chief Uchenna Okafor ordered the closure of the market.
A visit to the market saw that the sixteen gates into the market were under lock and key while some traders loiter around the vicinity.
Speaking, on the development, the Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi North Council Area, Honourable Chukwudi Orizu said going by the deadly nature of the second wave of COVID-19, Anambra State Government had to enforce strict measures to reduce the spread hence, justifying their action on the market closure.
He urged traders within Nnewi to abide by Anambra State directives on COVID-19 for the market to be re-opened.
Reacting, the chairman of the market, Mr. Dennis Ikegwuonu on behalf of the market leadership appealed to Governor Willie Obiano to forgive their non-compliance with COVID-19 protocols.
While assuring that they have put in place very strict measures to ensure strict compliance with COVD-19 protocols, Mr. Ikegwuonu stated that his taskforce will not only enforce compliance at the entrances but also in shops and at every nook and cranny of the market.
A trader, Mr. Damian Ogbonna, bemoaned the closure of the market saying that the state government should have at least issued an earlier warning before the closure.
