The Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture Mr Nnamdi Onukwuba has inspected the development of a one thousand hectares of land mapped out for rice production in Egwagwa/Nsuji Ogbakuba town in Ogbuaru council area of the state.
The project known as “Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme” is targeted to run a two year loan term which will be sustained for fifteen years with the aim of engaging the youths of Ogbaru and Anambra North in agriculture.
Our correspondent, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu who was part of the inspection team reports that arriving the Egwagwa/Nsuji project site, workers were seen carrying out their various jobs while some members of the community were also present to receive the Commissioner.
The project which spread across the three senatorial districts of the state is strictly for rice cultivation in Anambra North on the land donated by the chosen communities.
Speaking during the inspection Mr Onukwuba noted that the project is for wet season farming assuring that by middle of March, the clearing of the development site would be completed and would be followed by tractorisation which will last till the middle of April.
He also stated that while tractorisation is ongoing, trainings for the youths on the best practices for rice cultivation would be going on after which rice inputs and substantive amount of money would be distributed to the trained youths for tendering of the rice after maturity.
Reacting, the representative of the traditional ruler of Ogbakuba Prince Okay Ofubero, appreciated the state government, noting that with the project more youths from their Community would be gainfully employed and appealed for support from the government to help them construct the only access road leading to the farm.
The contractor in charge of the access roads Engineer Jude-Mary Nwaoti said that they just started work on the site and have finished with clearing and making arrangements on the earth work which will commence soon.
Recall that the one-point-five billion naira loan for the project was attracted by the Anambra state government under the Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme from the Central Bank of Nigeria and Federal Ministry of Finance with the aim of developing infrastructure for agriculture
