Governor Willie Obiano has flagged off road maintenance exercise in Neni, Anaocha Local Government area.

The event was held at Oye Neni, of the Council Area.

Works Correspondent Ngozi Obileri covered the flag off ceremony and reports that the need to constitute  Neni Road  Maintenance Agency was conceptualized by the late traditional Prime Minister of Neni, Chief Anthony Enukeme, to ensure that the over twenty four kilometers of roads done by individuals in the community last for a long time.

Based on that, stakeholders in the community led by a renowned contractor in the community, Engineer Paul Enidom of Paul B Construction Company came together, to ensure that the dreams of the late chief Enukeme were actualized by instituting the agency.

Few months after, the road maintenance agency has started work in earnest.

Flagging off the exercise in Neni, Governor Willie Obiano represented by the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor while commending  Ndi Neni for the initiative, noted that no community has constructed over twenty four kilometers of roads in Nigeria, and no individual has done up to eighteen kilometers of roads except the late Enukeme.

Governor Obiano said the idea to have the road maintenance agency is another bold step taken by the community to reduce the burden on government, even as he charged other communities to learn from Ndi Neni so that the State will sustain its status as the state with the best network of roads in the country.

He advised the Agency to conduct routine checks against burning of tires on the road, placing of bumps and dumping of refuse inside drainages.

Earlier, the Managing Director Anambra state Road Maintenance Agency, Engineer Emeka Okoye noted that the move was in line with the aspirations of the Governor in maintaining roads across the state, with  employment  of  one hundred and fifty youths from the three senatorial districts of the state and brought high tech equipment for  maintenance of roads across the State.

The Transition Committee Chairman  Anaocha Council Area Mr Patrick  Onyedum in a welcome extolled  Governor Obiano for creating enabling environment for such development to thrive and called on other communities to initiate such agency so that the issue of potholes will die a natural death in Anambra roads.

Earlier in a speech, the Chairman of Neni Road Maintenance Agency, Engineer Enidom said hundred percent good roads are achievable if government can partner town unions and stakeholders across all the communities by getting them involved in road maintenance in their various communities.
