A three storey building at No nine Okosi-Emordi Street, Woliwo Layout Onitsha was in the early hours of yesterday , gutted by fire and property worth millions of naira destroyed.
Correspondent Faith Onyemuche reports that when the ABS crew arrived the scene, the fire has already been controlled by men of the Fire Service, Red Cross and good spirited individuals.
Speaking to the ABS, the Deputy Superintendent, of the Federal Fire Service, Mr Uzonwanne Okechukwu said they received a distress call from a resident in the area calling for their intervention.
According to Mr Okechukwu, on arriving the scene the fire had already developed, adding that they used light jet water on the building to avoid collapse.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Woliwo Landlord and Tenant Association Mr. Arinzechukwu Okoye said he called the fire service after he got a distress call from a security agent in the area, pointing out that before he arrived the scene men of the Fire Service had already controlled the inferno.
Mr. Okoye commended men of the fire service and Red Cross for their quick response.
One of the affected tenants, Mr Benard Ezenwosu whose flat was seriously affected said he was at the shop when he got a call from his neighbor that the building was on fire stating that by the time he reached home, his apartment and property were completely burnt.
Mr. Ezenwosu who recently lost his wife appealed to the government and good spirited individuals for an assistance.
