The Christian Council of Nigeria, CCN, South East zone has elected new executive to facilitate and build the capacity of member Churches and ensure a sustained Christian lifestyle in the region.

 

The election held at the Salvation Army, Moore House Street, Enugu, saw member churches nominate ten persons each, and had the Territorial Envoy and National Director for Ecumenical Relations of the Salvation Army, Nigeria, Territorial Envoy, Dr. Levi Monanu, elected as the Chairman.

 

Other elected members of executive include Venerable Jonathan Agbo of the Church of Nigeria Anglican communion as the secretary, the Reverend O. E Ikeoha of the United Evangelical Church as the Assistant Secretary, and the Financial Secretary, Justine Anyanwu of the Nigeria Baptist Convention among others.

 

Addressing journalists, the new Chairman, Territorial Envoy Monanu, expressed gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him and promised to ensure unity amongst member churches and the society at large.

 

Dr Monanu said among other things, the church should be in the vanguard of inculcating moral values on the children so as to see them grow to responsible adults as a way of fighting societal ills that is causing unrest in parts of the zone.

 

He also stressed the need for church leaders to have heart to heart talk with youths of their various churches with a view to finding lasting solution to the bloodletting, kidnapping and violence ravaging the zone presently.

 

The General Secretary of CCN, the Very Reverend Evans Onyemara who was on ground to supervise the election, attested to the success and peaceful conduct of the election.

 

The Anglican Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, the Most Reverend Emmanuel Chukwuma, charged the new executive to always champion peace in the region.

 

The election attracted Archbishops and Bishops of the Anglican Communion, Methodist, Presbyterian Salvation Army and Baptist Churches from South East zone, including the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, the Right Reverend Owen Nwokolo who is the chairman of CCN, Anambra state chapter.
