The Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, has taken environmental sensitization campaign to the Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps, at Umuawulu/Mbaukwu Awka South Council Area.

Officials of ASWAMA and their partners were led on the awareness and mobilization campaign by the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr Amechi Akorah.

Paul Ezeoke reports that the sensitization programme attracted hundreds of corps members and some of their officials who were all wearing facemasks.

 

Mr Akorah said the exercise was to further strengthen the strategic partnership and collaboration with NYSC in its efforts to protect the environment, by equipping the corps members with necessary knowledge that would enable them extend the campaign to various parts of the state after deployment to areas of primary assignments

He urged the Corps members to see environmental sanitation as their responsibilities to encourage residents of the state to avoid acts capable of endangering the environment and ecosystem as well as the need for people to join hands with government to maintain a friendly and healthy environment.

 

Mr Akorah said that adopting environmental friendly attitude would protect people from adverse effects of climate change, resulting from depletion of the ozone layer and cautioned against burning of materials , deforestation and other acts that could  threaten the temperature of the environment which he said increases global warming and other environmental challenges.

 

He also urged the corps members to encourage people to participate in mass tree planting to provide effective response to issues of climate change as well as serve as watershed and habitat to millions of animals and humans that form part of the ecosystem, noting that trees do not only serve as wind breakers but also help in withstanding variety of natural disasters and regulation of atmospheric temperature as well as increase of oxygen.

 

Also speaking, the Head of Sanitation, NYSC Orientation Camp, Mrs Chinelo Ilukwe while commending ASWAMA for the programme, noted that the sensitization has not only provided the corps members with necessary information for attitudinal change towards the environment but has equally prepared them to be vocal agents of change in environmental issues.
