Anambra State government says it is targeting to achieve a State wide open defecation free status in the nearest future.
Governor Willie Obiano gave the promise while speaking on the declaration of Anambra East Local Government Area as open defecation free during the first ever South East Regional Water Conference in Awka.
Correspondent, David Okpokwasili reports that Governor Obiano who enumerated the achievements of his government in expanding access to water supply through the declaration of State of emergency on water supply and sanitation and setting up of a steering committee to ensure full implementation of policies by his government in the sector, assured that the government will not relent in ensuring that every Onye Anambra has access to portable water.
The Governor represented by the Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr Emeka Ezenwanne said the urgency to meet the demands of water and Sanitation and to create enough manpower for the sector drove the formulation of policies made by his administration in the past seven years.
The Minister of Water Resources, Mallam Suleiman Adamu represented by the Managing Director, Anambra-Imo River Basin Authority, Mr Okechukwu Osuagwu underscored the need for government at all levels to work together and step up the actions needed to achieve the aims of the National WASH Action plan.
The Chairman, Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Utilities, Chief Emma Nwafor, on his part, promised the support of the lawmakers in enunciating Laws that will ensure better control of the sector especially as it regards regulating drillers and ensuring that more trained professionals are involved in the industry.
The first South East regional water Conference, organized by the National Water Resources Capacity Building Network South East, is targeted at creating the necessary manpower and knowledge base needed to create more access to water in the region and ensure that the region becomes open defecation free.
