In order to reduce dependence on oil as a source of revenue, Cocoa and Plaintain Farmers Association of Nigeria, CPFAN, has flagged off Cocoa and Plaintain farming in Anambra State.
The event, organized by Cocoa and Plantain Farmers Association of Nigeria, in collaboration with Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture, attracted participants from within and outside the State.
In his remark, Governor Willie Obiano, represented by the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Nnamdi Onukwuba, said his administration has remained supportive of farmers in the State, noting that from now on, Cocoa seedlings will be added to the supports given to farmers in the State.
He recalled how Nigeria started Cocoa farming in 1956 in South West States, saying that Anambra has now joined the league of Cocoa farming States and assured that it will be done very well.
Governor Obiano commended the farmers association for its efforts in creating job opportunities, and advised other farmers who received loans to ensure that they utilize them for intended purpose.
In his address, the South East Coordinator of Cocoa and Plantain Farmers Association of Nigeria, Prince Samuel Dickson, explained that the reason for the gathering was to diversify the economy of the South East, with special emphasis on Cocoa and Plantain farming.
He noted that the objectives of the association include educating farmers on Cocoa and Plantain farming to promote their businesses, as well as creating job opportunities for the unemployed, among others.
Prince Samuel called on Ndi-Anambra to key into the project by utilizing their fallow lands for Cocoa and Plantain farming for a better tomorrow.
Also speaking, the National President of the association, Chief Ayodele Ojo, who pointed out numerous benefits in Cocoa farming, asked the Anambra State Government and private individuals to invest in it, assuring of a very handsome return.
In his goodwill message, a representative of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Oyelede Babatope, encouraged members of the association to participate in the CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme and Private-Led Accelerated Agriculture Development Scheme for funding assistance.
For the representative of World Bank, Mr Emeka Ejiofor, South East Cordinators of the group should work together until they bring Cocoa farming in the region to the standard of oil.
