Anambra State will clock thirty years of its creation tomorrow, August twenty seventh.
How has the State fared in the past thirty years, compared with other States created at the same time?
Correspondent, Chibuzor Okoye, takes a look at the journey so far.
Anambra, which prides itself as the State with most intelligent, industrious, rich and resilient people in Sub-Saharan Africa, was created on August twenty seventh 1991, by the then Military Government of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, alongside eight other States.
The State has been led from the time of then Navy Captain Joseph Abulu till the incumbent Governor Willie Obiano.
Speaking on how Anambra has fared in the past three decades, the Chief Medical Director, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka, Dr. Josephat Akabuike, said the State has done tremendously well, basing his assertion on developments in the areas of infrastructure, education, agriculture, health, among others.
Dr. Akabuike pointed out that the State has been lucky to have had some successive Governments that are focused, including the incumbent, Governor Willie Obiano, whom he said has given Ndi-Anambra some legacy projects, as well as the transformation he has brought to the health sector, urging the would-be incoming Government to sustain all the legacies for the continuous development of the State.
In his submission, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Development Authority, Venerable Amechi Okwuosa, noted that Anambra has done exceedingly well, as the State has moved from the era of despondency to become a trailblazer and light of the nation, which he said other States want to emulate.
Venerable Okwuosa, who maintained that Awka Capital Development Authority, which is the brainchild of Governor Obiano, is aimed at making Awka a cosmopolitan city that will compete favourably with other cities in the developed World, described Ndi-Anambra as highly resilient and entrepreneurial.
A commercial bus driver in Awka, Mr. Sunday Agbo, said that Anambra is the pride of Igbo nation in all ramifications, and praised the successive and current administrations in the State for raising the bar of development.
