Celebration of New Yam has been described as a veritable way to encourage Agriculture amongstĀ  youths while also keeping the culture of Ndigbo alive.
This was part of ideas projectedĀ  during the celebration of New YamĀ  by Nze Vincent Nwankwo at Onneh, Orumba South Local Government Area.

New Yam festival has become a reawakening period when the significance of Yam and farming in Igbo culture comeĀ  to the fore.
New Yam celebration these days features farming competition, masquerading and other cultural fanfare.
In his remark after cutting and eating of the New Yam, Nze Nwankwo said harvesting of the New Yam signifies a new life for everyman and woman created by God andĀ  noting thatĀ  celebrating such gift is important.
He emphasised that new yam celebration is a demonstration that the Igbo culture will continue toĀ  wax strong from one generation to another.
In his speech, the Commissioner For Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C Don Adenuba noted that individualsĀ  renain major stakeholders in sustaining Igbo culture and bringing development to their community, whichĀ  the state government has always encouraged.
Also speaking, the former President General of Onneh, Mr. Uchenna Maduike and an indigene of the community, Mr. Austin Nwafor said its a thing of joy to see how individuals are keeping the culture of their community alive and by extension promotion ofĀ  Agriculture, pointing out that it helps in food security, urging government to provide roads to aid farming andĀ  evacuation of farm produce .
