The first woman to become the President of the Awka Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, AWKACCIMA, has taken over the mantle of leadership at an investiture ceremony of the Chamber held in Awka.

Princess Caroline Ajuora, who was invested as the eleventh President of the City Chamber yesterday, is also the first woman to hold the position in the South east region of Nigeria.

Correspondent, David Okpokwasili  reports that Princess Ajuora will lead a twenty-eight-member enlarged executive to pilot the affairs of the Chamber for the next two years.

Awka Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture is one of the City Chambers in Anambra State, under the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, with the principal objective of creating a conducive atmosphere for the pursuit of commerce, industry and all other forms of economic activities of interest to the private sector.

Speaking at the event, Governor Willie Obiano, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Nnamdi Onukwuba, explained that the State Government under his leadership, will continue to make policies and reduce bureaucracies to make sure that businesses in the State benefit from the opportunities of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The National President, Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, NACCIMA, Chief John Udeagbala, represented by the President, South East Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Mr Humphrey Ngonadi, encouraged the new leadership of AWKACCIMA to use their tenure to promote more private sector participation for inclusive economic growth and development in the State.

In her acceptance speech, Princess Ajuora said she will drive support for female led businesses, start ups and small and medium scale enterprises to survive and also encourage good government policies that will create the necessary enabling environment for business growth.

Earlier in his address, the outgone President of the Chamber, Pastor Stephen Ndaguba said he was elated that a woman would be taking over from him, and also pointed out that the soon-to-be-completed Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, being built by the State Government, will greatly impact positively on businesses in Anambra, especially members of the Chamber.

During the technical session of the investiture ceremony, the Director of Unizik Business School, Professor Emma Okoye, in his lecture titled, “Robust response to tentative business models in Nigeria: Addressing the challenges of domestic production and domestic consumption “, advocated that manufacturers in Nigeria pull resources together to increase large scale production and processing of raw material in the country.

Professor Okoye held that the practice where Nigeria exports her raw material and import finished products will continue to impact negatively on her economy, while also calling for the total privatization of the power and energy sector to address the perennial power challenges in Nigeria.

Also present at the ceremony was the first female National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, NACCIMA, Chief Mrs Oluwaseun Lawson, and the Anambra State Head of Service, Barrister Harry Uduh
