The Chief of Staff to the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Primus Odili, has called on the academia to redesign school curriculum to address lack of employable skills that fuel youth restiveness, insecurity and other social vices in the country.
Chief Odili, who made the call at the third and fourth lecture series of Faculty of Social Sciences, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam campus, said quality education, with emphasis on skills acquisition, are needed to address present global economic crises, noting that the Obiano administration, since inception from 2014, has continued to show strong commitment to addressing youths restiveness, insecurity and other social vices by investing in agriculture and job creation.
Our Correspondent Joseph Egbeocha reports that the event with the theme, “Social Exchange Theory and the Nigerian Trajectories:Sustaining an (Un) Holy Matrimony”, as well as “Impactful Tertiary Education: Panacea for Youth Unemployment in Nigeria”, has in attendance members of the academia, guests and students of the University, with Professor Peter Olapegba, of University of Ilorin and Engineer Vincent Okeke, of Intercolor Industries Limited, as resource persons.
Declaring the lecture series open, Chief Odili thanked organizers for such event, which he observed, has topical issues that will help shape societal discourse and inform public opinion on national issues, noting that the dream of lasting peace, world citizenship and rule of international morality will remain a mirage, until the philosophy which holds one race superior and others inferior is permanently discredited and abandoned in Nigeria and other African nations.
The Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences of the University, Professor Obiajulu Obikeze, who regretted recent developments threatening the unity of the nation, called on relevant authorities to rise to the occasion, even as noted that the institution is on steady course in contributing to solutions to national issues.
Chairman and Secretary of the Organizing Committee, Professor Angela Nwamuo and Dr. Gideon Nwafor, explained that the event, aimed at reevaluating how education can be used to address issues bedeviling the nation, will equip students, who are mostly youths, to become successful in life.
Participants at the event, including Messrs Ikechukwu Elobisi and Ositadimma Ozioko, urged youths to embrace such opportunities, noting that education remains the bedrock for sustainable national development.
