The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and International Foundation for Electoral System, IFES, have organized a voter education training for community-based Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and People Living with Disabilities in Awka.
The event, which attracted members of the various associations, was aimed at educating the participants on the need for effective participation in an election.
Correspondent Chibuzor Okoye reports that while declaring the training open, the Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, represented by the Head, Voter Education and Publicity in the Commission, Mr. Samuel Nimem, thanked IFES, for the support they have been giving to INEC over the years, noting that everybody is important in the conduct of a free and fair election.
Dr. Orji maintained that the Commission is poised to conducting a credible election during the November sixth Anambra governorship poll, and hence they are educating everybody to ensure that nobody is left behind during the election, even as he urged Ndi Anambra to come out en-masse and vote to choose their Governor by themselves.
In his remark, the representative of IFES, Judith Rotten, urged the participants to step down the knowledge they must acquired at the end of the training to the grassroots to ensure that it gets the desired results.
The Director, Gender and Inclusivity Department of INEC, Mrs. Blessing Obidigwe, represented by a Deputy Director, Civil Society Organization, Mrs. Lakunuya Dorothy-Bello, said voter education is key to helping electorate know their rights and responsibilities, as well as the instrument to deploy at all times during an election.
Speaking on behalf of other participants, the Anambra State Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons Living with Disabilities, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, thanked INEC and IFES for the training, which he said will help them participate actively in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election.
