The International Community is observing today as Poverty Day.
Also known as International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, it was first observed on October seventeenth, 1987, to raise awareness on the need to end global poverty of all sorts.
Correspondent, Emmanuel Okonkwo who sampled people’s opinion on the celebration is our guide.
Research has revealed that poverty is not solely an economic issue, but rather a multidimensional phenomenon that encompasses a lack of both income and the basic capabilities to live in dignity.
It also revealed that the number of people living under the international poverty lines for lower and upper middle-income countries is projected to have increased in the poverty rate of two point three percent which about half of it is in South Asia, and more than a third, in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Speaking on the essence of the day, the Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Community Liaison, Chief Obi Ochije-Muodilim regretted the level at which rich persons in Nigeria get richer by the day and the poor get poorer, and called on the wealthy in the society to always lend a helping hand to the poor, as according to him that’s how to make the world a better place.
He commended the wife of the Governor of Anambra State Dr Ebelchukwu Obiano for using the Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFÉ to carter for the needs of the downtrodden in the State since the inception of her husband’s administration, and urged the next governor’s wife of the State to toe her steps.
For the President Igbos for a Progressive Nigeria, Mr Lawrence Onuzulike the Nigerian nation has all it takes to lift its citizens out of poverty, said the country can only conquer poverty by squarely tackling corruption without fear or favour, and leaders must learn to make people’s interest their top priority, and shun selfishness and inordinate quest for wealth.
On her part, an Awka resident, Lady Anulika Epundu-Okonkwo while blaming the problem of Nigeria on bad governance suggested that government should create employment opportunities for the citizens by building more industries across the country, and encourage the poor in the society to keep hope alive for a better tomorrow.
