As Nigerians joined their counterparts to celebrate this year’s World Mammography week, women have been advised to go for regular check of their breasts in order to avert breast cancer.
A Medical Practitioner and a Pharmacist Dr Oluebube Miracle Okoye gave the advice while addressing a cross section of women in a health talk in Onitsha.
Staff reporter Emengini Osadebe reports that Dr Okoye who described breast cancer as most common killer among women charged women of twenty years and above to go for breast cancer screening at least once a year for early detection stressing that breast cancer can be cured if detected early.
He enumerated series of risk factors that could cause breast cancer to include being a woman, personal history of cancer in the family, increase in age, exposure to radiation, obesity, excessive intake of alcohol and tobacco, late child birth, early menchre among others but added that the presence of these risk factors does not mean one has breast cancer.
The Medical Practitioner therefore urged women to get familiar with their breasts by self-examining their breasts every month and visit a specialist whenever they noticed any lump on their breast for screening and possible treatment before it could spread across other parts of the body.
Speaking to the ABS in separate interviews, Mrs Ifeyinwa Egwuatu and Mrs Nneka Egbebu said based on the increasing incidence of breast cancer among young women they organized the enlightenment campaign to educate the women on the need to undergo Mammography test at least once a year to help curb the disease.
They pointed out that early detection of breast cancer will save the life of the victim, advising women to visit a specialist any time they noticed abnormal lump or pain on their breast.
One of the participants Mrs Nneka Mbamalu expressed delight for being part of the event saying that she learnt a lot from the health talk and promised to take the message home.
