The traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Achebe says University of the future is one that is ready to embrace changes to remain relevant.
He stated this during the Maiden Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa annual Public Lecture series organized by Paul University Awka.
Queen Anigbogu was there and reports that the event attracted students, staff, management of the University, the academia, traditional rulers, the clergy among others.
In a lecture titled; “Challenges of University Education in Nigeria; Opportunity for Paul University”, Obi Achebe elaborated on the challenges of tertiary education in Nigeria and how they can be addressed.
He added that Paul University with its pedigree has all it takes to become a great University and called on the Church to rise to meet the challenge of supporting the institution.
Earlier in an opening remarks, the chairman on the occasion, Chief Ben Ndi Obi, described Archbishop Anikwenwa as a doyen of priesthood, a dedicated and committed Igboman who always has a message of hope.
In his welcome address, the acting Vice-Chancellor of Paul University, Professor Obiorah Nwosu, explained that the occasion was to honour Archbishop Anikwenwa for his resilience in the institution.
Professor Nwosu recalled how the institution came to being nurturing generation of leaders and stated that the management is poised to make the University a world class academic institution.
Former Minster of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, while reading a citation of the Chief celebrant, said he rose from being the son of a herdsman to become a shepherd of God’s flock with remarkable passion for human development.
In his response, the Chief Celebrant, Archbishop Anikwenwa attributed the Calibre of people who graced the event to God’s grace and hoped that other universities will benefit from the document of the lecture.
In a vote of thanks, the chairman planning committee, Professor Godwin Onu, appreciated God for the serene environment that made the event a reality adding that it is important to remember someone while still alive.
Some of the dignitaries that graced the occasion were former Governor Peter Obi represented by Professor Stella Okunna of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Director, Anambra State Library Board, Dr Nkechi Udeze, Professor Carol Umeobi of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, among others.
