Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport has been certified for full commercial operations.
Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano disclosed this during the official launch of the category nine airport.
Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that the governor’s entrance into the arena in company of his wife, Dr. Ebelechukwu Obiano ignited cheers from the crowd of ndi Anambra and others at event.
While appreciating the President Mohammadu Buhari led federal government for approving and certifying the airport for operation, as well as the Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika and Director General of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Nuhu who have remained supportive throughout the period of construction, revealing that the certificate has been handed over to him.
The governor said that the airport has been certified having met all the conditions required for commercial operations.
He explained that flights could not come because the regulatory authorities will require the approved airlines to have a counter at the airport before commencement which they are yet to do .
He enumerated the approved airlines to include Airpeace , Ibom Air, Dana Air, Anap Jets, adding that as time goes on, more will be approved and pointing out that Anambra deserves their own airport, being widely travelled people.
While restating that the project was financed without borrowing from the federal government or any financial institution, he said that over two hundred people have been trained for take off of Operations in the airport, noting that the process of recruiting more people will be gradual.
In a welcome address, the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor who described the event as an epoch said that it was a long and tedious journey, and confirmed that licence was duly granted by the federal Ministry of Aviation and Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority while one hundred million naira construction fee and twenty five million niara certification were paid when the construction started.
According to the Commissioner , Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and others have visited the airport at the construction stage which was climaxed by the visit of the Director General NCAA Captain Nuhu who commended the initiative, pointing out that in fifteen months, the first test landing was done, afterwhich seven planes had landed ever since.
While stating the special features of the airport including second longest runway in the world, terminal building, control tower with all the navigation tools, tarmac, fire house, trauma center, among others, Commissioner Ifejiofor stated that officials of the NCCA came last Tuesday and affirmed that the airport was ready to commence commercial operations.
Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor noted the economic benefits of the project which he said is enourmous for the state and the south east, while the Member representing Anambra East at the State House of Assembly, Pharmacist Obinna Emenaka appreciated the governor for the project onbehalf of his constituents.
The National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Oye said that the good heart of the governor has always made ways for him, and given ndi Anambra love and hope, pointing out that the high standards he has set will not be lowered, just as the Member representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency, Chief Chinedu Obidigwe said that since 1991, successive governments have not been able to build an airport which was initiatlly started at Oba but was stalled, calling on ndi Anambra to vote for Professor Chukwuma Soludo to ensure continuation and consolidation.
For the Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Senator Victor Umeh who expressed his expectation of a free and fair election, recalled that Governor Obiano came and enjoyed acceptance because of his pedigree, having provided improvement to good governance, noting that APGA has made immense sacrifices to the development of the state, adding that it is a decisive period for ndi Anambra because if people don’t exercise caution by supporting what is right, it may spell doom for the state.
