The Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu says judges and Magistrates in the State are working hard to see that justice is done to all at all times.
Justice Anyachebelu, who stated this at the 2021 annual Bar week of the Nigerian Bar Association, Onitsha branch with the theme “Access to justice in the face of insecurity in Nigeria: the citizens’ dilemma”, said out of the seventy newly conferred Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Anambra got ten, which he said shows that Ndi Anambra are industrious and hardworking, charging the new Senior Advocates of Nigeria to continue showing the light.
While declaring the Bar week open, Justice Anyachebelu called for all hands to be on deck in addressing challenges faced by members of the legal profession.
In his remark, the Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association, Onitsha Branch, Steve Onyechi Ononye, Esquire, said never before had Nigerian security system been challenged, leading to shutdown of various key institutions in the State, including the Courts, especially on Mondays and any other days declared to be sit-at-home-day by separatist group, resulting in people spending longer time awaiting trial.
In a welcome address, the Chairperson, 2021 Bar week Committee, Lady Amaka Uzuegbu expressed joy that the tradition of having the Bar week cum dinner in the month of December is not disrupted by the pervasive insecurity in the nation and thanked God for the success of the event.
In a keynote address, Reverend Father Professor Ikenga Oraegbunam from Faculty of Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka dissected the theme of the event and proffered solution, while the Administrative Judge of Idemili, Justice Pete Obiora spoke on ‘‘Access to justice in the face of insecurity: the bench dilemma,’’ and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria from the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Chukwuka Ikwuazom spoke on ‘‘Access to justice in the face of insecurity: the legal practitioners’ dilemma.’’
Staff reporter, Oggorchukwu Oranu reports that sick and elderly lawyers of the Premier Bar and Onitsha Red Cross Home were visited and presented with cash gifts at the event which featured question and answer session, attracted personalities in the legal profession from far and near, and was capped with traditional dance performances.
