As the curtain draws on Governor Willie Obiano’s eight years on the helm of leadership in Anambra State, there is a unanimous affirmation that historical narratives would favour the outgoing henchman.
However, most observers believe that on the back of the governor’s milestone performance, stands his wife, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano, who provided a unique shift and gave soft touch to her husband’s administration.
A stronger opinion from a larger audience representation states that the outgoing governor’s wife, through her charity organization, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE, reshaped the idea of the position of governors’ wives in Nigeria and introduced a certain kind of development.
With twenty-two fully furnished bungalows built and given to widows and less privileged rural women for free, twenty-two toilet and water facilities across rural markets in Anambra State, over four thousand women and youths trained in different skills and subsequently empowered with startup capital and equipment, free prosthetics, cleft lips and palates surgeries for children, among others, CAFE established itself as an ideal responsive voice for the needy.
Assessing the governor’s wife’s impact across eight years of her husband’s time in office, the Transition Committee Chairman of Oyi Local Government Area, Engineer Nnamdi Nwadiogbu noted that Dr Obiano creatively touched a core aspect of development, and gave complementary importance to the outgoing government.
On his part, the member representing Orumba South in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Emmanuel Nwafor, said that Dr Obiano has set a remarkable standard as a woman, and masterfully corrected the ceremonial impression that governor’s wives are often perceived as.
On their parts, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Development Authority, ACTDA, Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa and Lady Ogechukwu Okafor stated that the outgoing governor’s wife would be remembered for many positives, most importantly, her commitment to social services which earned her laurels, and maintained that her successors as well as other governor’s wives have already been provided with practical blueprints on how they could play major supportive role in the administration of their husbands.
