President Muhammadu Buhari has called for more stakeholder and private sector involvement in expanding employment opportunities for young people graduating from Nigeria’s numerous tertiary institutions.
President Buhari was speaking at the fifteenth and sixteenth combined convocation ceremony of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, held at its main campus in Awka, Anambra State Capital.
Correspondent David Okpokwasili reports that Six thousand, seven hundred and twenty-seven persons were awarded first degrees on the first day of the convocation ceremony, held for students, who graduated in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions.
President Buhari, who is also the visitor of the university, reiterated the commitment of his administration to providing adequate funding for human capacity and infrastructural development in tertiary institutions through budget allocations and different intervention programmes and explained that a robust private sector involvement in financing tertiary education will help produce graduates, who meet the needs of their industry and fulfilment of Nigeria’s dream.
President Buhari, represented by the Director, University Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Ilyasu Rakiyat while committing to resolve the ongoing impasse between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, asked members of the union to re-strategize and find alternative ways of pressing for their demands as incessant strike action further cripples the decayed education system in the country.
Contributing, the Chancellor of the University and Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Buba sought for a permanent resolution to the incessant strike actions in the Nation’s institutions.
Earlier, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Charles Esimone, who narrated all the efforts of the university towards achieving its Project 200 Vision, announced that the university has approved one-year scholarship for students, who win medals for the university at national and international sports competitions.
