The Permanent Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Health , Dr. Linus Nwankwo has said that there are over seven hundred tuberculosis treatment centres in Anambra state.

 

Dr. Nwankwo who disclosed this during a press briefing to mark 2022 World Tuberculosis Day in Awka explained that world tuberculosis day is being celebrated to raise awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis and to step up efforts to end the global tuberculosis epidemic.

Mr. Nwankwo regretted that COVID-19 pandemic has reversed years of progress made in the fight to end tuberculosis and there is need for more efforts and commitment in the fight against the scourge and made it clear that tuberculosis treatment in Anambra state is free.

 

The National Professional Officer, Tuberculosis South East Zone, Mrs. Vivian Ibezimako appreciated Anambra state for commemorating the day and maintained that their target is to end tuberculosis by 2035 and reduce tuberculosis deaths by ninety five percent.

 

The Anambra State Tuberculosis Programme Coordinator and the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu said that they have tuberculosis supervisors in all the twenty-one local government areas of the State and called for all hands to be on deck in fighting the disease.

Tuberculosis is a communicable disease usually caused by a bacterium and affects the lungs known as pulmonary tuberculosis and can also affect other parts of the body.

 

According to the World Health Organization, two third of all the people with tuberculosis can be found in eight countries namely, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines and South Africa.

 

The theme for this year’s World Tuberculosis Day is “Invest to end TB. Save lives”.
