Today is April Fools’ Day, celebrated annually on April one.
April Fool’s Day is a day set aside by the United Nations when people of all ages around the world, play practical jokes and hoaxes on each other, marking the celebration of the year’s fun festival.
Till date, the origins of the fun festival are always debatable and unknown, but many short stories are widely believed to be true.
According to one version of the stories, it all started in 1852 at France, when the country switched from the traditional Julian Calendar to today’s most widely accepted Gregorian Calendar.
However, because everyone in France was unaware of the change, they celebrated the New Year on April one, which is the actual date of the New Year in the Julian and Hindu Calendar, hence people, who celebrated the New Year were jokingly referred to as April Fools’ giving rise to April Fools’ Day.
Speaking on the essence of the day shortly after the March edition of the State Executive Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, the chairman, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, described April as the month of the year, when one can smell the aroma of flowers and grasses.
While urging members to avail themselves the funs that come with the day, Dr. Odogwu, noted that the only thing that is missing from everyone’s routine is fun, which according to him, is filled with the help of April Fool’s Day.
Dr. Odogwu however made NUJ members to know that it is beneficial for them to prepare themselves for the day because, there will be many unnecessary hoaxes and pranks that will hurt their feelings and ruin the day, so they should plan the day to identify any bad prank before someone does it on them.
Correspondent Ebele Ezeh reports that fooling others is not a good act, but fooling people on April Fools’ Day is an ancient tradition or a custom ritual that allows one to make people laugh for a day, so plan a prank or hoaxes and join in the celebration of this great event by spreading the word.
