The World Veterinary Day celebration was started by the World Veterinary Association in the year 2000; and is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of April.
The World Veterinary Association has membership in more than 70 countries of the world with active support from both local and national associations of the Veterinary Medical Practitioners in each country.
The occasion is held to promote the contributions of veterinaries all over the world to the health and well-being of animals, people and the environment. Animals and men live interconnected lives, and their existence depend on each other. The World Veterinary Association is mainly focused on the mitigation of climate change effects, responsible and wise use of natural resources through conservation and how to ensure proper disposal of medicines.
The World Veterinary Association, in collaboration with the veterinary medical association of each member country organizes several meetings and seminars to discuss new findings/challenges to the profession and share knowledge related to safeguarding the environment for future generations, and ensuring the co-existence of human and animals in the same planet. Awards are given to a member country whose work and activity imparted positively on this year’s theme and programmes.
World Veterinary Day celebration aims to spread the awareness about animal health care and steps one should take to curb animal cruelty. The day also teaches how to be responsible pet owners.
The theme of the 2022 World Veterinary Day celebration is “Strengthening Veterinary Resilience”. This essentially means providing veterinary doctors with all kinds of help and resources they require in the discharges of duties with respect to their veterinary medical practices.
As we celebrate this important day, let us remember that veterinary services from governmental and non-governmental components to para-professionals and technicians working in laboratories, could move the animal health sector forward. It is only with resilience and active support from the government that veterinarians working in Anambra State can thrive.
Animal health is at the heart of global challenges. This is why veterinary services are guarded toward better reliance through solutions that address a variety of needs and deliver enduring impact.
Healthy animal services require healthy advocates and solutions. One cannot have good public health unless they have good animal health, and one cannot have good animal health unless they have good public health.
Resilient veterinarians are better equipped to handle the daily challenges and crises that may occur, in the discharge of their duties, and one major request from veterinarians in Anambra State is the creation of Ministry of Animal Health and Production, that will help to reposition the veterinary profession against numerous challenges mitigating against its development in the State.
