The Third Session of the Twelfth Synod of the Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion, will hold from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 May, 2022, at Saint Peter’s Anglican Church Abagana, with the theme: “Running the Christian Race – Implications for Believers in Perilous Times,” Second Timothy, Chapter Three from verse One to Nineteen and Hebrews Chapter Twelve, from verse One to Four.
All roads will lead to Abagana Community during the period for the annual event that takes place at a designated church in a chosen community. This year, the event will be hosted by Abagana Anglican Community (AAC).
The early church in Abagana had many challenges but later got to the stage where it is today. The church started in a thatched mud house which got burnt about three times and later to the stone church building which was dedicated for use in 1938. Saint Peter’s Church, Abagana, located along the Enugu-Onitsha Trunk A old road, suffered much damage during the Nigeria Civil War between 1967 to1970. To this end, some parishioners moved to Udoeke Kindergarten School opened by Saint Peter’s Church earlier in Ezi-Udoeke Umudunu, and started worshipping there. This led to the construction of a church building which later became Saint John’s Church, Abagana. On 24th December, 1999, Saint John’s Church building was dedicated for service by His Lordship, Right Reverend Maxwell Anikwenwa.
Saint Michael and All Angels’ Church, Abagana did not take off from any kindergarten school, rather Saint Peter’s Church Abagana acquired a parcel of land at Ofeozalla Umudunu Abagana. The idea of planting a church to safeguard the land was initiated in 1994 and from then, they moved into action and by 2011 they had made very substantial efforts for the church to become independent.
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, Saint Michael and All Angels’ Church, Abagana was formally inaugurated as a Parish by His Lordship, the Right Reverend Alexander Chibuzor Ibezim, Ph.D.
Saint Christopher’s Anglican Church, Akpu Abagana is a young church built as an extension of Saint Peter’s Church during the tenure of Venerable Joseph Edokwe as the Vicar, to serve the old people and children living in that area. Priests from Saint Peter’s go there to conduct services for them on Saturdays. The 2022 Synod of Anglican Diocese of Awka, therefore, brings together not just the story of faith in Abagana but creates a forum for spiritual revival in the community.
