The Anambra State Ministry of Environment has conducted a tour of facilities at a Specialist Hospital in Oraifite.
The tour of the hospital became necessary because as a modern specialist health facility, there is a need for it to meet world class standards for the disposal of medical waste which is regarded as highly sensitive.
Speaking during the visit, the Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix
Odimegwu who commended the hospital management for procuring an incinerator for waste, requested that they would find ways to convert their waste to meaningful products that will serve the facility.
Engineer Odimegwu asked hospital owners to pay critical attention to sensitive materials used in hospitals which are harmful to the society and suggested for a world class equipment that will help in disposing hospital waste, recounting several encounters environmental staff have had with hospitals on waste disposal over the years and called for an attitudinal change.
The General Manager of the hospital, Amanda Obidike stated that the hospital has always maintained its standard and will remain supportive to the government policies through the provision of drugs to primary healthcare centers, provision of free surgery and construction of roads within the local community as part of their corporate social responsibilities and assured that the hospital will maintain and surpass the expectations of their host community and Anambra state at large.
