Centre for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics, in collaboration with the Youth Empowerment Solutions Project Initiative, and the Centre for Health Education and Vulnerable Support, has organized an enlightenment programme for Anambra youths, on how to protect their human rights and end Police brutality.

 

Participants at the programme which took place in Awka, were selected from the twenty-one Local Government Areas of the state, and are expected to stepdown the knowledge garnered during the programme to others.

 

The Centre for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics, is a non-profit making organization that fights for good governance, rule of law, human rights and anti-corruption; quality education, entrepreneurship and job placement, as well as promotes effective leadership training.

The event with the theme: “Soro Soke” or “Park Well”: Ending Police Brutality and Human Right Violation in Nigeria, featured series of presentations on the protection of human rights, ending police brutality, securing a safer society for the youths, curbing corruption, among others.

 

In their separate presentations, Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Chika Ifemeje represented by the state Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary Ministry of Justice, Ngozi Iwouno, and Vice Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association, Aba branch, Mr Victor Onweremadu while regretting that the present leadership of Nigeria has no regard for the rights of the citizens, asked youths to regardless of intimidation, peacefully speak out when their human rights are trampled upon, in order to get deserved justice from the judicial arm of the government.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Patrick Aghamba, represented by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr Daniel Ezeanwu, Special Adviser to the Governor of Anambra State on Youth Empowerment, Dr Nelson Omenugha, and Director Citizens Right Directorate and Office of the Public Defender, Nnedi Okechukwu, represented by Judith Mokwe encouraged the youths to be focused and work hard for the actualization of their life dreams, and stressed the need for continuous harmonious and peaceful strive for social justice in Nigeria.

Reacting to questions and comments on Police brutality during the event, the Anambra state Commissioner of Police, Mr Echeng Echeng, represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, asked the public to stop seeing the police as an enemy, but rather be law abiding and report any misconduct or harassment from any police officer to the appropriate authority for immediate action.

In an interview, the Founder and Executive Director Centre for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics, Reverend Father Godswill Agbagwa who spoke through the Project Lead, Mr Davidson Nwaonu, explained that Soro Soke project aims at building, training and empowering a movement of passionate and patriotic youths who will work as community gatekeepers to track and monitor human rights violations.

 

In their separate interviews, some of the participants, Mr Israel Orji from Awka South Local Government Area and Miss Kosisochukwu Obianefo promised to stepdown the knowledge garnered to others in their various Local Government Areas.
