The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to extend the voter registration deadline; in line with the extension granted political parties for their primaries.

SERAP said the extension of voter registration will give more time for eligible Nigerians to exercise their right to participation during the 2023 and subsequent elections.

Sources said the online voter pre-registration will end by thirtieth May, while the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration will end by thirtieth June 2022.

But in a letter dated twenty-eight May 2022 and signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said voters are also critical stakeholders in the electoral process, adding that treating all eligible Nigerian voters fairly would advance the people’s right to vote and to participate in their own government.

He explained that extending the deadline for voter registration would be consistent with constitutional and international standards, as well as the Electoral Act, and would not impact negatively on INEC’s election calendar and activities.
