The National President of Rotary International, Rotarian Shekha Mehta has stressed the need for mothers to ensure that Polio is permanently eradicated in Nigeria by immunizing their children whenever the opportunity calls.
Rotarian Mehta made the call at a Health Center at Okpuno, Awka South Council Area, during Polio vaccination exercise, sponsored by Emeka Offor Foundation in partnership with Rotary International.
The event featured commissioning of the renovated Health Center by Emeka Offor Foundation in partnership with Rotary International to support 2021/2022 District 9412 Conference held in Awka.
Over two hundred children were immunized against Polio by members of the group, who include past, present and district governor elect, Rotary Club District 9412.
Addressing the mothers, Rotarian Mehta represented by past District Governor, Abdul Hamid, said they were happy that Nigeria is Polio free but efforts should be intensified to make sure it did not come back into the country as according to him, there is fear that Polio has returned in two Asian countries.
On his part, the District Governor, District 9412, Dr Okey Okonkwo called on all hands to be on deck to ensure that Polio does not come back to Nigeria, by availing their children the opportunity to be immunized.
The Rotary International Polio Ambassador, Sir Emeka, represented by past District Governor, Rotarian Ijeoma Okoro, urged mothers not to relent in their continued efforts that helped in eradicating Polio in Nigeria, saying that it is open for children between zero to five years.
The organizer of the program and the past chairman, Polio Eradication Campaign Team, Rotarian Chika Ekwueme appreciated Sir Emeka for always bringing such services to the people and for his support announcing that the foundation will also sponsor the intervention in two other hospitals in Anambra.
The group earlier paid a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler of Okpuno, Igwe Sunday Okafor where they intimated him that the programme was purely to sensitize the people on the need to sustain Polio free society, urging him to ensure the message is sustained.
Responding, Igwe Okafor, who appreciated them for the gesture, recalled that he was a strong Rotarian back in his days at NEPA and urged them not to relent in their quest to make the society better.
Decoration of Igwe Okafor, by Rotarian Mehta and Sir Emeka respectively, distribution of mosquito treated nets and immunization featured at the event.
