Anambra State Government has attracted another Agricultural intervention programme known as Small Holder Horticultural Empowerment and Promotion, SHEP Nigeria, assisted by Japan International Agency, JICA.
SHEP Nigeria, which is intervening in horticultural crops like Ugu, Onugbu and other vegetables, will start with five communities including Nimo, Abatete, Oraukwu, Nawfija and Ogbunka in the first phase.
SHEP Nigeria, which has its slogan as “Grow to sell”, targets to encourage all seasons vegetable farming in the state.
Declaring open a three-day training for extension agents from the state four Agricultural zones and SHEP Nigeria Team at the Agricultural Development Programm, ADP, office in Awka for easy implementation, the state commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Foster Ihejiofor described the programme as timely saying that it is right on key with the agro-economic agenda of the present administration that targets to domesticate the production, processing and distribution of vegetables.
Dr. Ihejiofor, who charged the participants to teach Anambra State Farmers how to practice regenerative agriculture for easy acceptability in the world market, explained that SHEP Nigeria also targets one of the major areas of community poisoning that originates from the use of inorganic Fertilizers and agro-chemicals.
The programme manager of ADP, Mr. Jude Nwankwor, described SHEP Nigeria as a reward for excellence in their keenly contested proposal plan.
Mr. Nwankwor noted that Anambra State intends to double the initial benefiting communities using Government Cash Counterpart Contribution, GCCC.
On her part, a SHEP Nigeria trainer, Mrs. Patricia Uba, who took participants on market survey, charged them to conduct the survey with respective working groups and ensure that all questions are asked for the target crops.
