The State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, has organized a one-day sensitization meeting for flood-prone communities in Anambra.

 

The early warning interactive session held at Atani, Ogbaru LGA, was in collaboration with Local Emergency Management Committee, and was aimed at enlightening and educating the public on proactive measures to be taken against risks and dangers associated with flood disaster.

 

Ogbaru LGA has remained one of the most vulnerable flood-prone areas in the state, with persistent issue of flooding over the years.

 

Interacting with the community leaders and major stakeholders in the area, the State Coordinator of Local Emergency Management Committee, Mr. Nnamdi Esimai, observed that the early warning alarm had become imperative in order to expose participants to adverse effects of flooding in various communities, as well as precautionary measures to take in order to avoid attendant hardship and economic loss.

According to him, the huge investment of the state government in urban renewal projects and health sector will go down the drain if there is no collaborative efforts with stakeholders in the state.

 

He, among other things, cautioned against manmade disaster, lamenting that flooding has affected academic calendar in Ogbaru LGA, and reminded community leaders the need to complement government efforts by encouraging proper waste disposal.

Contributing, the President General of Umuozu community, Mr. Cyril Ezekwere, called for dredging and piling of River Niger to checkmate flooding in the area.

 

A cross section of participants, in their suggestions, identified inauguration of sanitation committee in various communities as one of the measures in assisting the government.
