Anambra State Waste Management Agency has inaugurated the Local Government Waste Management Committee for Anambra Central Senatorial District.
The ceremony performed by the Chairman, Governing Board of Anambra State Waste Management Agency, Dr Emma Ezenwaji, took place at the Government House, Awka.
in attendance for the inauguration were members of the Governing Board of ASWAMA, Local Government Transition Committee Chairmen from Anambra Central Senatorial District, Environmental Health Officers, a representative of the Nigeria Police among others.
In a remark during the event, the Chairman Governing Board of Anambra State Waste Management Agency, Dr Ezenwaji, charged the committee to see Waste management as a priority and stressed that ASWAMA will not run foul of Anambra State government’s policy on revenue generation which he said, is very important.
He further charged the committee which also has members of Community Based Organizations as part of them, to ensure that traders selling on top of drainages are removed and ensure that everyone must regularly clean drainage systems in front of their homes or shops.
Also speaking, the Managing Director, ASWAMA, Mr Mike Ozoemena, affirmed that waste management is a collective responsibility, pointing out that all hands must be on deck to clean up Anambra for the good of all.
The Permanent Secretary who is representing the Governor in the board, Mrs Ifeoma Ezeaku, appealed to the Transition Committee Chairmen to take charge and let people at the grassroot feel their impact through proper waste management in their localities.
Also speaking, another member of the board, Professor Ike Uzochukwu, said one of the ways to know a clean society is the absence of rodents and revealed that the number of Lassa Fever cases in Nigeria this year, is on the high side pointing to the fact that the country is deteriorating in cleanliness.
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated Committee, the Transition Committee Chairmen for Njikoka and Awka South Local Government Areas, Messers Clems Aguiyi and ThankGod Anagor, appreciated the board for the conference reposed in them and promised that they will work to the best of their abilities to ensure that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of clean, livable and prosperous Anambra State is achieved.
Others who spoke during the event include a member of the board, Chief Emeka Aghasili, a community-based organization member, Dr Dennis Ekemezie and Mr Chris Azor among others.
