A philanthropist, Chief Vincent Nwankwo of Onneh in Orumba South Local Government Area has celebrated the 2022 New Yam Festival in a grand style.
The event which took place at the Eze Akunne Villa, at the Umuezeamasi village, Onneh, attracted relatives, representatives of the four villages that make up Onneh, members of Old Aguata Union, friends and associates of Chief Nwankwo.
cultural ceremony commenced with the celebrant, Chief Nwankwo and his wife, Nkiruka, dancing to music from a live band which ushered them into the celebration arena followed by opening prayers said by Mr Tony Nwude, an indigene of the community and symbolic breaking of kolanut.
Roasted tubers of yams with local sauce were brought to the celebrant who after a few remarks cut the yams signifying his celebration of new yam festival.
Earlier in his remarks, Chief Nwankwo explained that the cultural event is an annual event through which he uses to appreciate God for a fruitful farming year.
He encouraged members of Onneh community not to relent in striving to better their lots in life and prayed for the well being of all that came to witness the ceremony.
In her comments, the wife of the celebrant, Nkiruka described farming as a very important part of the life of Ndigbo which if one engages in will enjoy food security.
She further noted that the new yam festival which is an avenue to appreciate Providence for bountiful harvest also serves as a way Ndigbo have leisure to deal with stress accumulated over the farming season.
For the President-General emeritus of Onneh, Mr Uchenna Madubike agriculture is one of the things the community is known for but needs access roads to enable farmer convey their farm produce to consumers.
Also contributing, another indigene of the town, Chief Okechukwu Nwafor, the Celebrant is a notable philanthropist to the community who is passionate about helping people irrespective of whether they are his friends or enemies and mentioned several ways he has affected the less privileged positively.
Individuals, groups, paid homage to Chief Nwankwo while cultural dances and masquerading took the centre stage.
Chief Nwankwo through his Eze Akunne Foundation over the years, have been building houses to the homeless, gave scholarships to indigent students and as well gave financial empowerment to many others.
