Umueri community in Anambra East Local Government Area has received her own bitter experience of the current flood menace in the riverine areas as houses, farm lands, crops, property and other valuables have been submerged in the area.
Staff reporter Njideka Okoye reports that the flooding adversely affected Shell Road and Udabo Umueri as well as surrounding areas.
When ABS visited the area, damages caused to the people were visible as men and women were seen harvesting their crops prematurely, while most houses and other property were under the water.
Farm lands with crops, rice mills, fish ponds among others were flooded, and economic activities in the area have come to a halt as the famous Otuocha market was covered by flood causing people to trade along the road while people from other communities and states could no longer come to the market.
The traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Benneth Emeka, who went round to assess the situation put their losses at over twenty million naira, noting that their people who are predominantly farmers have lost their means of livelihood.
Igwe Emeka called on the government to come to their aid narrating that he and stakeholders in the community are trying within the capacity of the community to evacuate many of them who are now homeless.
He thanked the State government for making an arrangement at Umueri General Hospital where the displaced persons can now stay and the Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East for his efforts to get the place ready, appealing to them to expedite action and help the community overcome the challenges.
