The Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Mrs. Ify Obinabo has said that the state government will not tolerate any form of trafficking in the state.
Mrs. Obinabo made this known in Awka when six girls who usually rent their kids to traffickers came to plead for the release of their children.
While giving the warning, Mrs. Obinabo noted that anyone caught engaging in such acts will not go free and revealed that the women will be used as scapegoats to serve as deterrent to others and intending offenders.
The six young mothers who usually rent their kids to traffickers were Ogochukwu Mercy Nwachukwu, twenty years from Ebonyi state, Christiana Ọkọn, twenty-one years from Calabar, Onyebuchi Orajiaka, twenty years from Okija, Uchenna Amadi, aged thirty from Ebonyi, Juliet Ọkọn, twenty-eight years from Ákwá Ibom state and Mirabel Edet, twenty-three years also from Akwa Ibom, came to the office of the Commissioner to plead that their children be released to them.
During interrogation, they revealed that they are usually paid ten to twenty thousand naira every weekend depending on the number of children one rents and promised that if pardoned they won’t engage in such illegal acts again.
Recall that in May, 2022, eight children were rescued from a trafficker at Afọr Ukpor marker in Nnewi South local government area of the state when unknown gunmen invaded the community.
It was during the incident that the said trafficker who is yet to be identified left the children ranging from about four months to a year and ran away before they were rescued by a social worker and brought to the office of the Commissioner for shelter.
