Trades at the Ogbokirika section of the Onitsha main market, are counting their losses following the devastating effect of the flooding which has left many traders displaced and stranded.
A visit to the market revealed that the majority of the shops at the bank of the river have been submerged, and deserted as traders fled from their shops.
Most of the victims who sounded helpless and pathetic, lamented the untold hardship the critical emergency had subjected them and regretted the present economic realities.
Expressing pain and sadness while inspecting the flood ravaged section of the adjoining market, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Chief Innocent Ezennia encouraged them not to lose hope as a result of the havoc wrecked by the flood and noted that the move was to identify with the bewildered traders over their plights.
He noted that the state government is on top of the situation, assuring that the interest of Ndi Anambra remains Paramount in the agenda of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
The Secretary of the market, Comrade Obi Ifedi, and Zone Chairman, Chief Robinson Ezebunanwa, as well as Mr. Jude Okoli, recalled that the disaster had hampered businesses and unleashed suffering on families.
Some of the line Chairpersons, who identified most of the trades as widows and vulnerable, including Mrs. Monica Mmaduka, Ijeoma Okoye and Mr Michael Alozie, passionately appealed to the government to assist them as thousands of naira worth of goods were lost to the flood.
