The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare in collaboration with a non-governmental organization, Ebuka Okafor Foundation have empowered trainees of skills acquisition center Awka.
The trainees who were over seventy in numbers were the graduands of the 2021 batch of the student’s skills acquisition center Awka.
In her speech, the wife of the Anambra state Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo charged them to give in their best in ensuring that the equipment’s are deployed to a judicious use and noted that the training and empowerment were meant to prepare the graduands for tomorrow, by giving them the needed skills which will make them to be financially independent and become useful to their families and Anambra State at large.
In her address, the women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Mrs Ify Obinabo noted that the event is the first time since the inception of the skills acquisition training and empowerment since 2008, that a philanthropist is collaborating with the ministry and urged the students to be good ambassadors of the center by diligently applying the knowledge and skills acquired during the course of the training to a good use.
On why they partnered with the ministry, a spokesperson of the Ebuka Okafor Foundation, Mrs Blessing Austin-Nweke explained that charity is the hallmark of the Foundation, hence the need to reach out to young girls and women in the state by collaborating with the ministry.
Equipment given to the graduands include sewing machines, hair drying machines, mechanized ovens, among other tools.
There was also a display of different items produced by the students.
The 2021 batch has completed the one-year training classes at the Centre bringing the total number of the graduates produced so far since the school began in 2008 to one thousand, two hundred and twenty-nine.
Highlights of the event were the presentation of certificates by the wife of the governor to the graduands, cultural dance, modeling of wedding gowns made by the students among others.
Present at the event were the wife of the Deputy Governor of Anambra state, Mrs Oluchi Ibezim, members of the Ebuka Okafor Foundation led by Chief Okey Okafor, some wives of the Transition committee Chairmen, among others.
