The traditional ruler of Nibo Community in Awka South Council Area, Igwe Michael Ngene, says UNESCO’s assertion that Igbo Language may soon become extinct should be a source of worry for Ndi Igbo.

 

The traditional ruler, who made the assertion during an Igbo Language Function in Awka, stressed the need for all hands to be on deck in promoting Igbo Language and Culture.

According to him, a people’s culture is their identity as people without culture are like a lost sheep without direction.

 

While tasking every Onye Igbo with the responsibility of promoting and protecting the language and culture, Igwe Ngene, included those born and bred in the Western World.

Contributing, a lecturer from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Nkechinyelu Nwokoye and the National Vice President of Ohaneze Ndigbo-Worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, called on Ndigbo to accord topmost priority to the promotion of Igbo Language and condemned the use of English Language in writing foundation stone plagues of buildings, notice boards and posters on streets in Igbo Land.
