Anambra State Government, through her Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has empowered some women with disabilities under her ‘One Woman, One Skill’ Initiative.
The initiative is geared towards eradicating poverty among women with disabilities by empowering them with skills that will make them self-reliant and employers of labour.
Addressing members of trainees, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Youth Empowerment, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, represented by Mr Dubem Osili, said issues affecting women and children are priorities of the Soludo administration, adding that his team has initiated many programmes and packages that will better their lives.
In his speech, the State Chairman of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, said the vision of establishing the women’s arm of the association is yielding fruits as efforts are on to achieve all-round development of women with disabilities; so people will stop taking undue advantage of them.
He further commended the state Governor Soludo for investing in the lives of the women, noting that the Governor’s passion to develop human capital, add values and take them out from poverty is in tandem with his mission of achieving livable and prosperous Anambra.
In her welcome speech, the Woman leader, Association of Anambra State Women with Disabilities, Comrade Ncheta Nwanokwara, disclosed that following poverty index among members of the association, and to ensure they are gainfully employed, the state government deemed it necessary to come up with the “one woman, one skill” programme; to see that an average woman in the state is productive and self-reliant.
Comrade Nwanokwara encouraged the beneficiaries to channel the money given to them to rightful skills and follow the ideas and steps exposed to them during the training so as to achieve their aim.
In a presentation on “Gender Based Violence on Women with Disabilities”, a resource person, Mrs. Eucharia Anekwe, regretted that many women with disabilities are tortured emotionally, abused, face sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination just because of their vulnerability, stating that everyone is at par and people with disabilities, including women, must have the right to live like others.
Also in her presentation, Mrs. Ify Aronu-Okafor highlighted the essence of networking, and asked the women to usher themselves into next level by being focused in their business, conversant with information communication technologies; as networking in business can add more values to their lives.
Presentation of empowerment fund and other side attractions climaxed the event.
