With a view to developing sustainable value chain in the agricultural sector, achieve food security, and reduce bills on food importation, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD and the Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN, have commenced a mid-term review of the Value Chain Development Programme, VCDP, in Anambra State.

The FGN/IFAD VCDP delegation announced the move during their visit to Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, in Awka.

According to the team leader, Professor Jones Lemchi, the mid-term review is an important mission that is geared towards assessing the progress made by the programme, identifying the challenges it faces and also weigh its opportunities.

Professor Lemchi told Dr Ihejiofor that they will embark on a field assessment of projects executed by the FGN/IFAD VCDP and expressed hope that the state will surpass their imagination even as he commended the state for being strong over the years and asked that the tempo be increased.

Responding, Dr. Ihejiofor, who extolled the choice of investment of the FGN/IFAD VCDP in the state, which according to him, is clearly in line with the state government drive in the agricultural revolution, assured continued support.

While pointing out that Governor Soludo’s administration is committed to continuing with increased support, the commissioner pointed out that over the years, other communities have benefitted from the programme and appealed to FGN/IFAD VCDP to allow the state manage the process to spread it across all local government areas, warning that the state will not support inorganic farming in pursuit of its regenerative agriculture.

For the State Programme Coordinator, FGN/IFAD VCDP, Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha, the importance of the mid-term review in a life of a project is immeasurable, pointing out that projects speak of right choices in the agricultural sector of the state.

The delegation kicked of the 2022 Mid-term review mission at Achalla Community, Awka North Council Area, where they were received by the Transition Committee Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Ucheze, community stakeholders and farmers.

Welcoming their guests, Mr. Ucheze, represented by a director in the council, Mr. Linus Iwuchukwu, thanked the FGN/IFAD VCDP for their impactful projects which have met the needs of the people and appealed for more support.

The delegation concluded their first day visit with the internal mid-term review progress report, where Mr. Agwuncha enumerated their achievements and involvement with farmers in the eight participating council areas while corrections, questions and answers were entertained.
