The Anambra state Commissioner for Power and Water Resources,Mr Julius Chukwuemeka has commended the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF for it’s post -flood intervention initiative in Anambra East and West and Ayamelum.

Mr Chukwuemeka noted that the state has sustained partnership with UNICEF in different sectors including the Ministry of Power and Water Resources through the Anambra state Rural water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA).

In her address the Water, Sanitation And Hygiene – WASH Coordinator in Anambra East Local Government Area Mrs Helen Offor said report on the flooding in the area was based on verification of the monitoring exercise conducted in the area and disclosed that out of fifteen wards in the area, ten were affected by the flood, while forty three WASH Communities suffered as a result of the flooding, adding that EZI – Agulu-otu Aguleri, Igbariam,Otuocha,Nando, Umuoba-anam and Nsugbe Communities suffered adversely as a result of the flooding in Anambra East council area.

 

She noted that schools, health centres, boreholes and other facilities were badly damaged but expressed satisfaction that Umuezeanya and umuochie villages of Umuoba-anam are now using their Boreholes damaged by flooding after after they were repaired and restored in order.

In his contribution UNICEF Enugu field office WASH specialist Mr Timi Kiabuku explained that UNICEF is intervening in the areas of child protection, provision of health facilities and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, WASH, stressing that the major actors in the intervention programme are state, local government officials and community leaders, adding that the rehabilitation of old facilities by the community is one of the success stories.

 

Also speaking the traditional Ruler of Umuoba-anam igwe G.O.Ekwealor commended UNICEF for securing the people of the area, stating that his community is one of the beneficiaries of UNICEF interventions.

 

in his remark the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH consultant supporting WASH Section of UNICEF Enugu office Mr Andy Nwanze said the stakeholders meeting was to collect data that would help in planning for UNICEF interventions In different areas.

According to him UNICEF would move into affected Communities for the assessment of damages done by flooding .

One of the stakeholders and Transition Committee chairman of Anambra West Mr Felix ikechi described the impact of the flooding in the area as devastating, lamenting that eight persons including two children died during the deluge, while calling for concerted effort from stakeholders in a bid to amilorate the plight of those affected.
