Two hundred victims of the recent flood disaster in Anambra West Council Area, have received Dignity Kits from the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare as directed by the donor, United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA.
The distribution, which took place at Community School Oda, in Umueze-Anam Community, attracted community members and the beneficiaries.
Addressing the assembly, the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Honourable Ify Obinabo, explained that the kits, donated by the UNFPA is a means of providing succour and assured of more.
Honourable Obinabo further stated that the distribution exercise was also among the state government’s agenda in ensuring that communities affected by the flood are not neglected.
On his part, the UNFPA Sexual Reproductive Health Specialist, Dr Kelvin Chukwuemeka, took time to explain the items in the kit, and added that the mandate of UNFPA is to protect vulnerable women and girls, who are victims of flood, rape and other abuses, hence the need to take action in ensuring that their well-being is not trampled upon.
Appreciating the donors on behalf of the women, a community chieftain, Chief Mrs. Theresa Anijaobi, expressed happiness over the organization’s well thought out plan and promised to make good use of the kits.
Sensitization on how to use the dignity kit by Royal Heritage Health Foundation and the distribution of the kits to the women formed the highlights of the event.
