The Anambra state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike says the state will continue to make the health sector resilient and sustainable.
Dr. Obidike stated this during a two-day meeting of the state’s third State Council on Health held in Awka.
The event which has the theme “Resilience and Sustainable Health System for Anambra, The Way Forward” drew critical players and stakeholders in the health sector across the Country.
Dr. Obidike explained that in order to achieve universal health coverage, the National Council on Health has mandated states to hold its State Council on Health meetings annually to address critical issues in the health sector and also chat way forward.
The Commissioner noted that the Anambra state Council on Health is responsible for health interventions such as the protection, promotion, improvement and maintenance of the health of the citizens of the state, and formulation of policies among others, as well as offer advice to the Governor, on matters relating to the development of relevant health policies and adaptation of National guidelines on health and its implementation.
According to Dr. Obidike, the Council is also an avenue for deliberation on critical issues affecting the health sector in the State and consequentially seek possible solutions on how best to address the issues, and promised that Anambra must achieve universal health coverage through providing access to standard quality health care bearing in mind that no one must be left behind.
In a keynote lecture, a professor of Health Economics, Systems and Policy in University of Nigeria, Professor Obinna Onwujekwe who regretted the pitiable state of Nigeria’s health sector, said that the recent pandemics and epidemics have shown that the county’s health system is not resilient and that in order to achieve universal health coverage, health sector must be resilient at all levels.
In his goodwill message, the Anambra state Coordinator, World Health Organization, Anambra Field Office, Dr. Adamu Abdulnazir congratulated the state for organizing the event and promised that they will continue to support in achieving a resilient and sustainable health sector.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, ASHIA, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, Dr. Joe Akabuike among numerous others delivered goodwill messages at the event.
