The Federal government has been urged to use the present dry season to accelerate construction work on Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway.

Speaking in Awka, the Vice President Ohaneze Ndigbo worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke Ogene, expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of activities on the Anambra end of the project.

Chief Okeke Ogene said Onitsh-Awka-Enugu Road and Enugu Port Harcourt Road are critical infrastructure for socio-economic life of Anambra State, Southern region and Nigeria in general and should be priority projects the federal government should target to complete before the end of the life span of the present administration.

He called on political leaders and other stakeholders from the region to join hands and take necessary steps to ensure that federal roads in the area receive the attention they deserve.

Chief Okeke Ogene commended the work done so far on the Second Niger Bridge, noting that the facility is gateway to all parts of the country and would benefit the entire Nigerians because it would improve movement of vehicles and save hours often wasted in gridlocks.

The Ohaneze Vice President commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the ongoing road projects and effective security network across the state and asked other Southeast Governors to emulate him in order to transform the zone.

In his reaction, the state Chairman Miners Association of Nigeria, Chief Henry Igboeli, cautioned against acts that could threaten the integrity of critical infrastructure across the state.

Chief Igboeli called for strict enforcement of ban on illegal mining and sand excavation, especially close to the second Niger Bridge and road projects across the state to protect them from erosion devastation and land degradation, noting that protection and preservation of the environment are collective responsibility of the government and the people.

He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for increasing the tempo of road construction across the state which he noted will help open up various parts of the state and boost socio-economic activities as well as give individuals and communities a sense of belonging.
