Political parties have been urged to prevail on their supporters to respect the peace accord signed at the Anambra State Police Command Amawbia, Awka South Council Area.
Speaking in Awka, the Vice President of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, said this would ensure hitch-free general elections in Anambra State. Paul Ezeoke reports that
during the signing of the peace accord, the Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Echeng Echeng, said the accord was part of measures to discourage excesses before, during and after the elections.
Chief Okeke-Ogene said the candidates and their supporters should not see the election as a do or die affair, and should continue to uphold the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines in all their activities, noting that campaign of calumny and politics of bitterness would only defeat the primary objectives of the elections.
He urged the youths to be on the vanguard of promoting peaceful and conducive atmosphere for the elections, as the outcome of the elections will play important role in shaping their future.
Chief Okeke-Ogene enjoined security agencies to remain alert to prevent any threat of insecurity, and commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for restoring stability in the state.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Chief Henry Igboeli, has extolled Governor Soludo for suspending collection of flying revenues, including sand beaches and borrow pit, chippings, stones and gravel.
Chief Igboeli noted that this would help control activities of illegal miners and those diverting the revenue of the state government, as well enable government put in place effective and efficient measures to ensure optimal harnessing of potential in the mining sector.
He explained that this is necessary in order to attract more investors to explore opportunities in the state non-oil sector and expand revenue windows, as well as increase employment opportunities.
