It is now known that millions of naira worth of goods, properties and buildings were lost to Tuesday’s fire incident at Onitsha main market which affected the two-story building housing fire service center.

 

The ugly incident which occurred at the wee hours of yesterday morning, left traders with heavy anguish.

 

The scene reports that pitiable situation enveloped the market with lamentations of the huge loss compiled with the present economic realities.

 

ABS on arrival observed that the highly inflammable nature of the lace materials in the shops aggravate the inferno, as fire fighters made efforts to rescue the situation and avert further escalation.

 

Narrating the incident, the Caretaker Chairman Onitsha main market Chief Innocent Ezeoha who decried the quantum loss attributed the cause to electrical fault, noting that the intervention of both the Federal and State Fire Service forestall the incident.

 

Chief Ezeoha described the outbreak as a tragedy that has thrown traders into mourning as many had just stocked millions of naira goods before the election break.

 

He appealed to the state government to make good the earlier promise of beefing the market with a functional firefighting equipment to forestall future occurrence.

 

Some of the victims who recounted their predicament, including Messers Okechkwu and Anene Uba estimated that their losses run into scores of millions as none of their wares was spared by the ugly incident, even as they recalled that similar development at Kano street few months ago.

 

The victims appealed to government to look into their plight and assist them to start off again.
