The Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has pledged support for the establishment of schools in correctional centers.

 

Professor Chuma-Udeh gave her support while welcoming the new head of Onitsha Correctional Center, Deputy Controller Micheal Anugwa, who was on a courtesy visit to the ministry, at the Jerome Udorji State Secretariate Complex, Awka.

 

She applauded the establishment of a school in the center as a wonderful initiative saying that it offers the inmates opportunities of living a better life when released into the society.

 

The commissioner, who expressed her believe in the power of education said that it brings enlightenment, hence her strong support and maximum cooperation.

 

Earlier in his speech, Deputy Controller Micheal Anugwa, frowned that he inherited a correctional center that was not in tune with modern correctional facilities as it lacks proper educational facilities and conducive atmosphere for learning, against the law governing correctional centers.

 

He opined that education and skills acquisition are strong factors in rehabilitation process and solicited for help from the ministry to ameliorate the dearth of subject teachers at the center.
