An Environmental Scientist, Professor Leo Muoghalu has blamed erosion menace ravaging parts of Anambra State on lack of consideration for the environment in construction and urban planning.
Professor Muoghalu disclosed this while delivering a lecture on flood menace in Anambra State, causes, prevention and remediation: A call for community participation” during World Earth Day celebration held in Awka.
Professor Muoghalu lamented that flood occasioned by building on waterways and poor urban Planning were responsible for over one thousand active erosion sites in the state.
He said cutting of trees without replacement, nature of Anambra soil, blocking of drainage channels with solid waste are also responsible for the worsening erosion problem in the state.
Professor Muoghalu stressed the need for the people to change their behaviour towards the environment by avoiding activities that aid environmental degradation to restore the environment.
The university Don called on Anambra State government to carry out proper planning of urban areas in Anambra State, encourage tree planting in erosion prone areas as well as enact effective laws that will arrest erosion to reclaim the state from environmental degradation.
