Communities have been urged to support efforts of the state government towards preventing and controlling erosion across the state.
Speaking in Awka, the Chairman of the Committee in charge of erosion menace in some communities in Old Aguata and Agulu in Anaocha Council Area, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene called on the Federal government to be alive to its responsibilities by intervening on gully erosion sites threatening various parts of Anambra State and entire Southeast region to complement what state governments are doing.
Chief Okeke Ogene enjoined the federal government to make conscious efforts towards attracting back the World Bank and international development agencies to assist in tackling erosion devastation in the state and commended Anambra State government for using the state lean resources to intervene on various projects in parts of the state and sustain necessary synergy with stakeholders to explore permanent solutions to the challenge.
He asked community leaders and other stakeholders to increase enlightenment and sensitization of the people on the need to collect and control run-off water from their compounds, plant grasses and trees in strategic areas and avoid indiscriminate cutting of trees and sand excavation.
Chief Okeke Ogene who is also the Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, charged contractors handling road projects to ensure that drainages are properly connected to the right discharge point to protect the road and entire environment from erosion devastation.
Also speaking the Anambra State Chairman of Miners Association of Nigeria, Chief Henry Igboeli enjoined residents of Anambra State to join hands with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s government to protect the environment by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages and maintaining regular sanitation and cleaning of environment.
Chief Igboeli also asked market leaders to sensitize their members on the need to comply with environmental laws and ensure proper disposal of waste at designated locations, noting that these would enable the people to live a healthy life and make the state a reference point in the country.
He also urged people in urban and rural areas to plant economic trees to support Governor Soludo’s vision of restoring agricultural economy and livable environment.
